I am trying to perform an SQL backup to an AWS S3 bucket, I have set up encryption (JPS), but the backup of the database remains as a native .sql file instead of a .jps file

The behaviour you're seeing is by design. The "Main site database only (SQL file)" backup type always saves the database as a plain, uncompressed, unencrypted .sql file, regardless of any encryption setting you have configured. The JPS encryption setting applies to the backup archive, but this backup type does not create a backup archive β€” it just dumps SQL directly.

To get an encrypted backup archive containing your database, please change the Backup Type in your backup profile's Configuration page to "All configured databases (archive file)". This backup type packages the database dump inside a JPA, JPS, or ZIP archive. Since you have JPS encryption configured, the resulting archive will be encrypted with the passphrase you set.

The storage destination (your AWS S3 bucket) has no bearing on this β€” the archive format and encryption are determined entirely by the backup type and the archive settings in your profile configuration.
