I cannot update the backup software directly from Joomla. I always have to do it from extension and then manually upload the zip package. It does work in Admin Tools.

Go to System, Update, Extensions, and click on Check For Updates in the toolbar. Does it work for you now?

Yes it works again. I don't know what you did but it works fine now.

Thanks for the quick response.

The update XML file served by the CDN was out of date. Even though I had replaced it in the origin server, the CDN itself hadn't picked up the change (it normally does in a matter of a few minutes). I manually cleared the CDN cache and it, of course, worked.

This is a tricky issue to anticipate. I can't check right after uploading as it takes a few seconds to a few minutes for the individual CDN nodes to pick up the updated file. I can't be twiddling my thumbs for 10 minutes in waiting to test the upload either; the problem happens too rarely to warrant that. I'd love to be able to say that I can make sure this doesn't happen again, but the reality is that I am out of practical ideals to address this particular issue – at least for now.
