My server runs with timezone Luxembourg and Joomla! is configured with timezone Luxembourg. However, Akeeba Backup shows GMT/CET time. What am I missing here? I tried to check all configuration options, but didn't find anything...

Akeeba Backup shows dates and times in several different places, and they do not all get their timezone from the same setting. I can't tell which one you are seeing, so I can't yet tell you what to change.

Could you tell me where you see the time that is wrong? These are the places I mean:

  1. The backup archive's file name. For example, site-example.com-20261101-213000cet-abc123.jpa.
  2. The backup's description. The default description is "Backup taken on …" followed by a date and time.
  3. The "Start" column in Manage Backups. This is the date and time next to each backup record.
  4. Somewhere else. For example the Control Panel page, a backup's details, an email, or the log file.

Please also send me:

  • A screenshot, or a copy and paste, of the date and time you see.
  • The date and time you expected to see.
  • If it is the Manage Backups page, tell me whether your own Joomla user profile has a timezone selected, or whether it is set to "Use default".

With that I will be able to help you accurately, instead of trying to cover different options with different sources which might confuse you unnecessarily.

Sorry to file an incomplete request and thanks for the quick answer.

I am referring to the backup's description (00:10:10 GMT) and the "start" column (2026-11-02 00:10 UTC) in manage backups. I expect to see 01:10 CET. Timezone for my profile is "Use default".

P.S.: I guess the description is set by Panopticon.

moira

Thank you, the screenshot makes this clear. These are two different things.

The description

The text "Scheduled remote backup with Panopticon taken on Monday, 02 November 2026 00:10:02 GMT" is generated by Akeeba Panopticon when it starts the backup. Akeeba Backup only stores and displays it. There is no setting in Akeeba Backup which changes it.

The "Start" column in Manage Backups

This one you can change. The date and time in that column are converted to the timezone of the user who is logged in. We believe that, when the user's profile says "Use default", this page uses UTC instead of the timezone in Joomla's Global Configuration. That matches what your screenshot shows ("00:10 UTC"). I haven't been able to test this on your site, so please treat it as our best explanation rather than something I am absolutely certain about.

To make Manage Backups show your local time:

  1. In the Joomla administrator, go to Users, Manage, and click on your user account.
  2. Go to the Basic Settings tab.
  3. Set Time Zone to Europe → Luxembourg (do not leave it on "Use default").
  4. Click Save & Close, then go back to Akeeba Backup, Manage Backups.

The Start column for that backup should then read 2026-11-02 01:10 CET.

Each user has their own timezone setting, so every user who logs into the backend will need to do this to see their local time.

I have investigated why you were seeing the start time in UTC, and it is a bug in Akeeba Backup.

When a user’s Time Zone is set to “Use default”, the timezone in Joomla’s Global Configuration should be used. Instead, Manage Backups (and the Restore page) used UTC. I see that part of the logic which implemented exactly that was lost back in 2021 when I was rewriting Akeeba Backup from FOF to Joomla MVC. I am actually surprised nobody noticed it before, including myself.

I have now fixed this, and the fix will be included in the next version of Akeeba Backup. With the fix, users whose Time Zone is “Use default” will see the times in Manage Backups and Restore in the timezone chosen in Global Configuration, which on your site is Europe/Luxembourg. Users who have chosen a Time Zone in their own profile keep seeing their own timezone, as before.

Until you update, the workaround from Moira's previous reply is valid: set the Time Zone in your user profile to Europe → Luxembourg instead of “Use default”. Once you have installed the new version you can set it back to “Use default” if you prefer, and the times will still show in CET.

PS: The description is indeed set by Panopticon which doesn't know your site's timezone. Reading the timezone would have been an extra request at a privileged endpoint which is not guaranteed to be enabled. This is why it defaults to GMT.
