Environment
- Joomla! 5.4.10
- PHP 8.4.27 (also failed on 8.3.36)
- Akeeba Backup Pro 10.4.0 (2026-08-26), updating to 10.5.0 Pro

Description
When I try to update Akeeba Backup Professional from 10.4.0 to 10.5.0, the update fails with:

Copy file failed
Package Update: There was an error installing an extension: com_akeebabackup-pro.zip
Error installing package

Joomla's log (Log Almost Everything enabled) shows only:
WARNING jerror Copy file failed
WARNING jerror Package Update: There was an error installing an extension: com_akeebabackup-pro.zip

The previous Akeeba update installed without problems.

What I have checked so far
- Other extensions (JCE, Tabulizer) update normally, so the tmp folder and Joomla installer seem fine.
- J2Commerce also fails to update with the same error; its own install log shows its preflight completes successfully, so it fails at Joomla's file copy step as well.
- File permissions in administrator/components/com_akeebabackup (including the backup folder) are 644, folders are 755.
- Backups are not run via cron; only manually from the back end.
- PHP is on a version patched for PHP2Shell.
- I have asked my host to check file ownership and whether their malware scanner blocked or quarantined any files during the update; awaiting their reply.

Questions
1. Are other users reporting this with 10.5.0, or is this almost certainly server-side?
2. Is there a known issue with malware scanners (e.g. Imunify) flagging files in 10.5.0?
3. Is there anything else you'd recommend I check or ask my host?

Thank you,

This is definitely server-side. At this point, our code is not involved at all; it's Joomla copying the files. The post-installation code does not run until after Joomla has copied the files and executed the database migrations.

Let me give you a few more data points:

  • Installation of the Core and Pro zip packages is tested automatically using end-to-end tests (Playwright drives headless Chrome against a fresh Joomla 5.4 and latest 6 running in a freshly created Docker lab). If any errors pop up the pre-release test halts with an error that tells me not to continue. I introduced this before releasing 10.4.0.
  • Installation of the Core and Pro zip packages is tested manually by yours truly as part of daily operations and, crucially, as part of the release checklist. I do it against preinstalled Joomla 5.4 and 6.2 sites which are kept updated automatically with Panopticon.
  • There have been no reports of a packaging issue, however unlikely it is to happen with all the layers of testing I've put for extension installation.
  • The message you report is not something new or unknown. It is always a server issue. I will remind you, however, that administrator/components/com_akeebabackup is just one of the directories being written. Off the top of my head, there's components/com_akeebabackup, api/components/com_akeebabackup, media/com_akeebabackup and, of course, the language directories and their subdirectories in the site's root and in administrator.

Unfortunately, and infuriatingly, Joomla can't be bothered to tell us what cannot be copied over. This would have made troubleshooting a lot easier than trying to guess.

Thanks for your reply, I'll check with my webhost whether any settings were changed after last month's worldwide php problems.
