I am building a site that will use the Joomla built in user registration login and later the Virtuemart shop.

If I have to restore a backup I am going to lose the records of new users and customer orders.

If I am going to make a major change to my site I can make an additional backup before I install a new module or whatever the major change is. I can also disable the login and shop for 30 mins or so at a quiet time before I do it.

But what if my site is corrupted accidently by something unexpected?

What do people do to minimise loss of data in this way, other than doing a full backup every few hours?

Also does anyone know of a module/software that would just allow me to back up 1 article before I edit it so I do not have to restore the whole site if I screw up one article edit?

For the single article backup, edit the article, view it in the "source" view of your editor. This presents the html code as text. Copy that out and save it to a text file. If you need to restore it, just open in source view again and paste the code in. My paranoia has served me well over the years. :)

The changes that you are most concerned about are database changes. You could do a database only backup as a CRON job every few hours. The CRON backup requires Akeeba Pro. The database only backup is not complete, but would cover your new users and sales transactions. It would not cover new merchandise pictures and other uploaded files. Do a complete backup once or twice a day, depending on how often it is necessary. You would set up two different backup profiles to do the database only and full site backups.

Why has nobody produced a one page backup/restore, or some equivalent to set a restore point, so you could 'GoBack' or 'Rollback' to ten minutes ago if it did not work?

Akeeba Pro has an internal restore function from the Administer Backups screen that does basically that. :)
