I have a Fabrik application that stores all of it's data in a separate DB (on a separate server). There's a lot of data entry on those table every all all during the day. I currently phpmysqlautobackup to back this DB up and send it to a Gmail account. Works ok (except for the handling views which it backs up as data instead).

My intent with transitioning to ABpro is to back everything up to an S3 bucket. First test with the a full site backup (less that database) went ok (although I haven't test the restore yet).

Now I'd like to configure a profile that backs up *just* the external DB so I can run it a higher frequency than the Full backup (which runs once daily). But my first test seems to indicate the APpro *always* includes the site DB in the backup. Is that accurate? Is there a workaround?

What you say is very accurate and can be worked around very easily (but it's not documented - hey, you found a thing I haven't documented yet!).

First create a profile with a backup type of "all configured databases (archive file)" for S3 to be able to work with the backup. Add the external database using the extra databases definitions. Then, click on the RegEx Database Table Exclusion and create a new rule like this:
#^(.*)#i

Remember to click the disk icon to save it. This rule essentially tells Akeeba Backup "do not backup any table from the main site's database". The joomla.sql file will still be created and included in the archive, but it'll have a 0 bytes size.
