Is it necessary to provide a "Secret Word" and to set "Enable front-end and remote backup" to "Yes" for Akeeba Remote Control to work?

I assumed it was, and the documentation somewhere said to do it, but I didn't find anywhere else in the process to enter the "Secret Word". Still, I followed the directions.

Later I got to wondering, so I deleted the secret word and set "Enable...remote backup" to "No", ran a test backup with Akeeba Remote Control, and it still seemed to work fine - ran a full backup and downloaded the file.

Am I missing something here, or are those settings just unnecessary?

Currently using Akeeba Backup Pro 3.1.5

They are necessary for Akeeba Remote Control 4 or for Akeeba Remote Control 2.5 (the one you're using) if and only if you decide to use your Secret Word instead of username and password for authenticating yourself to the site.

To sum it up:
- ARC 2.5 will work without these settings enabled
- Using the alternate authentication scheme with ARC 2.5, necessary if you have installed a misbehaving user authentication plugin such as a phpBB-Joomla! bridge, does require these settings.
- ARC 4 will not work unless these settings are enabled
- They are not obsolete; they are required for front-end backups (legacy CRON backups and usign altbackup.php)
- ARC 2.5 will be an end-of-life product once ARC 4 reaches stable. The major benefit or ARC4 is that it doesn't require the XML-RPC layer and plugin, it doesn't use the (unreliable) FTP protocol and it is compatible with Joomla! 1.6.
