Mandatory information about my setup:

Joomla! version: 1.5.23
PHP version: 5.2.14
MySQL version: 5.1.26
Host: Moving from MediaTemple to VPS.net Cloud Hosting
Akeeba Backup version: 3.3.a3

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Please attach your Akeeba Backup log file in order for us to help you with any backup or restoration issue.

Description of my issue:

I know from the docs that temporary URL's wont work after restoring a backup. Here my situation; I'm trying to evaluate VPS.net's new Cloud Hosting by migrating my site over to it for some tests. However, my site is still hosted with my previous host, so no domain is assigned to the new host. I'm looking for the best way to use Akeeba to migrate my site over to it and use the temporary URL since that is all I have available (and cant fully move to the new host until I've tested my site on it.) Any guidance you can provide is much appreciated.

Thanks so much,

nicholas

The first thing you can do is to try and restore the site despite using a temporary URL. Sometimes it works, but its results are nto guaranteed.

Another approach is to have a "scrape" domain name (a domain name you own but not use for any live site) and assign it to it. This is the easiest approach and only costs about 20$/year to own such a scrape domain.

The third approach is to manipulate your computer's hosts file to assign an inexistent domain name (e.g. www.test.foobar) to the IP of your VPS.net account. Then go to the VPS.net account and assign that inexistent domain name to it. You can then access your VPS.net site using this domain name, only from your computer. If you have a Mac, you can use GasMask to easily edit your hosts file.
