Mandatory information about my setup:

Have I read the related troubleshooter articles above before posting (which pages?)? Yes
Have I searched the forum before posting? Yes
Have I read the documentation before posting (which pages?)? Yes
Joomla! version: 1.7.3
PHP version: 5.3
MySQL version: 5.1.45
Host: Linux / Apache /2.0.64 (Red Hat)
Akeeba Backup version: pro 3.3.10

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Please attach a ZIP file containing your Akeeba Backup log file in order for us to help you with any backup or restoration issue. If the file is over 2Mb, please upload it on your server and post a link to it.

Description of my issue:
Tried to install Pro (core was installed).Failed with directory permission errors that were cleared up. Then the message:
-1 - An error has occurred.
Copy failed
Return to Control Panel
started. No control panel icon or other signs.
Successfully installed in the test version of the same site.
When I map the Joomla test site to the production database, it fails. When I map the production site to the test database it works. Reloaded all of Joomla 1.7.3 and production site works except for Akeeba backup. When either the test or production joomla site points to the test database it works. When either the test or production joomla site points to the production database backup does not show up.

Tried to remove all records from the database per the instructions in the forum but no change. There is something in the db that is preventing the installation from finishing. I need a list of the items/records etc that I need to remove from the DB to get it going again.

Would just go with the test database but there are article content in the production database that do not exist in the test database. I purchased the pro version so that I could move the production data back to the test for my next joomla project (community builder) but I have not been able to get Akeeba backup to work with the production database.

Suggestions?

ACtually, this problem is usually happening due to permissions issues, or because you have set up a wrong temporary directory on your site. In all of those cases, following our installation troubleshooting instructions, especially the "Checking your temporary directory" and "Enable FTP" sections.

Nicholas,
I did double check the permission issues and temporary directory as suggested in the documentation.

Because I had a working site (test) where the akeeba backup installed correctly and I had a production site where the akeeba backup would work when pointing to the test database. I took a gamble and with the test site pointing to the production database I reinstalled the akeeba backup and it completed successfully.

With this success I then pointed the test site to the test database and the production site to the production database and now both work correctly.

Last step was to backup the production site which worked and transfer the production site to the test site which also worked.

Not sure why it would not install, there was a problem in the production database... both are now working so all is well.
Thanks.

If you are still not able to install Akeeba Backup directly on the production site, you still have a files permissions issue. In fact, based on what you said above, I'd say that while your live site has some permissions issue, your test site doesn't, that's why your method seems to work. I would also like to add that with your method only the database got updated, but not the actual code (files) of the component, so you still have the older version installed.
