Mandatory information about my setup:

Have I read the related troubleshooter articles above before posting (which pages?)? yes
Have I searched the tickets before posting? yes
Have I read the documentation before posting (which pages?)? yes
Joomla! version: 2.5.7
PHP version: 5.3.x
MySQL version: Server version: 5.1.65-cll
Host: stormondemand.com / a liquidweb co
Akeeba Backup version which took the backup: Akeeba Backup Professional 3.6.8 (2012-10-20)
Kickstart version used to extract the backup: Kickstar core 3.6.0

Description of my issue:

At backend Joomla admin login I get Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 50331648 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 32 bytes) in /home/r3public/public_html/libraries/phputf8/utils/unicode.php on line 49.

So I had a 32MB config for memory and increased the memory and it went away. I navigate to a new page and a new me error comes back. We reset it to 48MB and when navigating to a new admin page I ge a differnt error.

At the sitefront end when I do the cleanup I get:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function mb_strlen() in /home/r3public/public_html/modules/mod_bt_contentslider/classes/btsource.php on line 134

Help! I have moved other sites to this new server without any issues. Should I have used kickstartPro?

The restoration is irrelevant with this series of issues. As you said yourself, the PHP memory limit is low. It's very low. 48Mb is way too low. 64Mb is better. Something like 92 to 128 Mb is the best. Sorry, there is nothing related to my software here to help you with.
