Description of my issue:

Hi Nicholas, I haven't attempted to migrate the site yet, this is a pre-migration question.

I need to move the site from one host Ausweb to another host Rochen, but I only have the one domain name to work with. My concern is this comment in the Kickstart userguide "Trying to restore to the temporary URL of a cPanel host (e.g. http://1.2.3.4/~username) will lead to restoration failure and your site will appear to be not working. This is normal and it's just how your server and CMS software work."

I will be moving from eg www.mysite.com.au to http://cairo.directrouter.com/~mynewsite   but I'm not sure whether it is going to work based on your comment above? What are my other options in this instance? I need the original site on Ausweb to remain live until the new version on Rochen is tested & fine.

Thanks, I really appreciate your help. Nicola

Hi Nicola,

Well, you're in good luck because I have firsthand experience with Rochen (hey, it's our host!). You can transfer your site. The process is simple. You will backup your site on Ausweb and restore it on Rochen. It works smooth as silk. What you cannot do, however, is test the front-end of the site. SEF URLs don't work on the temporary URL of your site (http://cairo.directrouter.com/~mynewsite). This is a known Apache limitation. Having spoken a lot with two Rochen engineers and the owner of the company about this I'm convinced that we can't work around it. After transferring your site you'll have to do the domain name transfer. Experience tells me that you're unlikely to have any serious issues post-restoration if the back-end of your site works. I hope that helps!
