Description of my issue:
Hi
I have loaded the required files to the ht docs folder but as I have not yet pointed the nameservers to the new site i am accessing the folders using an ip address in the form of ftp://{my ip address}/kickstart.php to start the restoration. This just takes me to the php script [i think thats what it is?] but no restore panel?
Can you advise

Thanks

Barry

Barry,

Accessing kickstart through a temporary address (one that includes a tilde ~ character) will cause problems, but using an IP address should not. I am not sure what you mean by "This just takes me to the php script" - kickstart.php is a php script. What are you seeing?

Hi Dale

Sorry if I haven't explained by issue clearly, basically what I am saying is that I don't get the restore site control panel up. All I am seeing is some code. I have restored several sites ok in the past but I was able to start the panel with www.[mydomainname]kickstart.php In this case as I only have an ip address the line ftp://[myipaddress]kickstart.php {enter ftp username and password} does not start the restoration panel. What should I be typing to start the process on my server?
Help much appreciated!

Thanks
Barry

If you give me a secure response path I will give you the ftp username and password

Ah! So you're seeing the contents of the kickstart.php file and the file is not executing? That would be a server setup problem, the server doesn't know what to do with a php file.

The problem can also be caused by a php.ini file or .htaccess file on the site. If you had an AddHandler command in your .htaccess file from the backed up site to change the php version on the old server, for example, that could cause this problem.

Hi
I have contacted my host and they tell me that using ftp is not the way to do this and have told me to
initiate the test domain on my account. the address is in the form of http://{number}.test.prositehosting.co.uk/

Will using http://{number}.test.prositehosting.co.uk/kickstart.php be the correct way to start the resoration panel. and if so when the name servers are pointed to the new host and i turn off the test site will all be ok? or will i have to change the ini and other files?

Thanks

Hi

I have used the temporary site address and the site is all ok and running but ONLY when I rename the
.htaccess to htaccess.bak Can you advise me how to modify this file.
the below line is what i get.
Should I use the htaccess maker in admin tools to create one?

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request

Getting There!

Thanks for you assistance

My apologies Barry, I was looking at the address and missed the "ftp://".

Since you have a follow up question about the .htaccess file, you got past starting kickstart.php. Yes, that was the correct way to call it.

i guess it would be possible to point the prositehosting.co.uk domain to the folder that you have the temporary site in, but usually you would back the site up from the temporary location and restore it to your final location. The restore script would update the tmp and log settings in configuration.php. You would need to manually update any extension that stores a fixed path in its own configuration files. You will have to do that with the current temporary site if you have any extensions that do that.

First, rename your current .htaccss file to htaccess.bak. Now rename the default Joomla! htaccess.txt file to .htaccess. That should put the default file in use. If you don't have htaccess.txt, you can pull it out of a new download of the Joomal! package. That file has protection built in to it for some common exploits, so we want to start with it. Your site should load without the 500 error at at that point. You can leave it that way or use the .htaccess maker to modify the security of your site.
