I'm using Xampp on a windows 7 machine and trying to kickstart a jpa archive. When I hit the start button nothing happens. Not network activity, no errors, nothing.

dlb
My ESP tells me you already know this, but you would start kickstart with the url localhost/kickstart.php.

Is javascript enabled on your browser?

The url I'm using is: http://localhost/CT/kickstart.php (root is D:/xampp/htdocs)
Yes, JS is enabled. I'm using Firefox, but have tested on Chrome and IE as well.
The start button also looks awkward. It says BTN_START. Is that normal?

dlb
BTN_START is a clue. That is the name of the language string, it indicates that the language file is missing or can't be loaded.

Double check your php version. Keep in mind that some hosts default to antique versions of php and you have to call the modern version in your .htaccess file, usually with an AddHandler directive. When you are starting kickstart, the .htaccess file is not available, so your version of php may not be what you expect.

My php version is showing 5.5.11 in kickstart.php

bluebridgedev
Chrome console is showing:

Uncaught SyntaxError: Unexpected token ILLEGAL

dlb
I need to talk to Nicholas about this. The only similar issue that I found was a php version.

Hello John,

It seems that the problem is that Javascript does not execute on your local server.

The first think I want you to try is disabling any antivirus, Internet security or other similar software which may be running on your site. It's best to disable them and restart your computer. We are aware that AVG Antivirus is completely destroying all Javascript on sites not on its whitelist due its severely buggy "link checker" feature which should better be called "Internet destroyer". I presume there are more abysmally coded antivirus / security solutions out there which screw up perfectly harmless Javascript. Even worse, AVG Antivirus has proven to be completely idiotic in disabling its Internet destroyer feature: you may disable the "link checker" feature, but the change will not take effect until you restart your computer. They don't tell you or warn you about it either. Bonus frustration!

If this doesn't help, please make sure that you are indeed using Kickstart 3.8.1. Try downloading a fresh copy, extract it on your computer and put all extracted files (not just kickstart.php) in the directory where you are trying to restore your site. The additional files are there for the rare cases where your browser doesn't let you use the Javascript / CSS libraries from remote servers. Can you guess when this is bound to happen? When restoring to localhost :)

If all else fails you can always use Akeeba eXtract Wizard to extract the backup archives. In fact, it's faster than Kickstart on Windows (and only on Windows – it has to do with the way file writes work on this operating system).

Hi Nicholas,

I don't have any anti virus running.
I am indeed using kickstart 3.8.1, re-downloaded anyways, same thing.
I checked firefox settings and javascript enabled = true.
I also kept all the kickstart files.

bluebridgedev
I am still curious as to why kickstart didn't work, but can not put anymore time into this. I used extract wizard like you suggested Nicholas and it worked.

Thanks!
