Hello,

I need to restore Joomla, WordPress or PHP sites very regularly! on my local PC to work on SASS files and compile them to CSS.

For my backups I use the 3 versions of Akeeba Backup (Joomla! WordPress and Standalone).

I am unable to complete the restore process.
The restore process visibly stops after unzipping the .jpa files and before running the installation script.

I work under Windows 10 and have tried several development environments (MAMP for Windows, Wamp, Laragon).

I know this is a recurring problem that is not necessarily due to a Kickstart problem.

But it is for my part very frustrating I am open to all suggestions that could facilitate my work.

A big thank you for your great products.

Best regards
Simon

I am a bit confused by the phrasing. As soon as the extraction is complete the process in Kickstart is supposed to stop. It shows you a button to run the restoration script. Clicking on it simply accesses the /installation/index.php URL on the current site. This is where ANGIE, which was part of your backup archive, is extracted in.

If the button doesn't work it would mean that a browser extension is blocking it. Not sure why it would do that but I've seen stranger things afflicted to unsuspecting users by browser extensions. You can try visiting that URL yourself.

If you mean something different, please post a video or screenshot.

Hi Nicholas,

Thank you for your reply.

Sorry for my confusing post.

When I'm trying to restore a backup, the progress bar which is displayed during the unzipping step ends up stopping and nothing more happens.
The page with the button to launch the installation script is not displayed.

But I could launch the script manually.
I didn't know I could do this way.

Thank you

I need some more information to better understand the issue.

Which version of Windows 10 are you using? For instructions on how to find this please look at https://www.howtogeek.com/236195/how-to-find-out-which-build-and-version-of-windows-10-you-have/. I need the Version number, not the OS Build.

Which browser and version are you using?

Are you using any browser extensions which might be blocking JavaScript such as but not limited to NoScript, Privacy Badger, uBlock Origin etc?

Is your latest test using MAMP for Windows, WAMP or something different? For example, I know that XAMPP has a known, major configuration issue which causes PHP to randomly throw core dumps (crash) when PHP scripts are accessed with a certain frequency or faster, the exact frequency being dependent on the CPU performance. On an 8th gen i5 I would have to run more than 3 PHP scripts per second. On a 4th gen i5 (same performance as a 7th gen i3) I would only need to run more than 2 PHP scripts every 4 seconds. Weaker processors or device designs suffering really bad thermal throttling (like Surface Pro and to a certain extent my older Surface Book) would cause PHP to crash even faster.

I haven't use Laragon but I'll try it. I am not sure if they're using FastCGI or mod_php and whether they have the correct non-ZTS (correct for FastCGI) or ZTS (correct for mod_PHP) version installed.

Meanwhile, can you please retry after disabling Norton Safe Web? I have had a lot of bad experiences with antivirus / firewall software for Windows.

Also, please note that Windows 10 actually contains a very powerful antivirus called Windows Defender (recently renamed to Microsoft Defender Antivirus). It used to be a joke but since 2019 it is steadily outperforming commercial antivirus software. It's what I recommend using instead of other antivirus applications.

Nicholas,

Thank you for your suggestion about antivirus software.
As a new Windows user (I am a long time MacOS user who can't afford Mac price anymore) I am a bit nervous about virus on Windows.

I've disabled Norton antivirus and firewall and Norton browser extension and tested again.

Unfortunatly I'm experiencing the same phenomenon: I must launch installation script manually because the page with the installation button does not load.

Wait, do you see the "Run the installation" button? If you do, the problem is much simpler: Firefox' popup blocker. Remember that Laragon sets up a "fake" domain name for each site? This means that as far as Firefox is concerned you are accessing an external site. Popup are blocked by default on external sites. Browsers have a bit too liberal definition for what a "popup" is. Anything that opens as a tab JavaScript and has a window label attached to it is a popup. This happens to be exactly what the Run the Installation button does. Is it possible that you get a barely visible popup blocker icon in the address bar?

Well no, I don't see the "Run installation button".
By saying "I must launch installation script manually" I would mean I could run the installation with the URL http://my-local-domain/installation.

Disabling the Firefox option to block popup don't make the page with the installation button to load.

I am out of ideas and I cannot reproduce this issue locally. At least you have a way to work around it.

Hello Nicholas,

It's OK.

One last question before closing the ticket.
Do you have some recommendation about the right tools to use to make an AMP environment on Windows? Softwares like Xampp, Easy PHP… What about Docker or WSL?

Thank you

Yyyyyyesssss... I have some very opinionated ideas and I have blogged about them.

If you are deploying mostly on Windows servers which use IIS you can use this https://www.dionysopoulos.me/iis-development-server-for-php-on-windows-10.html

For most other people using Apache and MySQL on Windows is probably the best approach. I have blogged about this on https://www.dionysopoulos.me/apache-mysql-php-server-on-windows-with-multiple-simultaneous-php-versions.html That article is old but it still applies for modern Apache, MySQL and PHP versions.

I have both kinds of server set up on my Windows laptop. The one I would normally use is the Apache server. I only use the IIS installation when I am developing the web.config Maker or trying to troubleshoot an issue that only seems to happen on a Windows server with IIS.

But wait, there's more!

First of all, you can make PHP have much better performance on your Windows 10 local development server. I have put together all my tricks in https://www.dionysopoulos.me/improve-php-performance-on-windows.html

The second issue is that you don't get HTTPS by default. With relatively minimal effort you can issue self-signed SSL certificates and use them on your local server. You only need to trust the certificate root you'll be creating that signs them. I've written the instructions for Windows on https://www.dionysopoulos.me/forge-your-own-ssl-certificates-for-local-development.html
