For some reason BRS cannot connect to the database. However, if I simply browse to the site (after the failure) the restoration runs fine with what looks to be the exact same credentials?

Any pointers on where I might look to figure out why this might be?

Much appreciated.

Visiting the site simply reloads BRS. The idea here is that when there is a directory named installation, Joomla will redirect to it. BRS extracts into a directory named installation.

The only thing I can think of is that your issue is either related to timing or the session. Try clearing all cookies for your domain before starting the restoration. If that works, the problem is related to session handling in PHP. The solution is deleting said cookies before running the restoration. Otherwise it would be something related to your server configuration and the timing of the restoration. In this case all I can think of is wait a bit before continuing with the restoraiton.

The Aha! moment. I had recently upgraded my PHP CLI to V8.5 but for some reason it didn't install the mysql module, so when the CLI BRS tried to connect to database there was no socket to talk to. The error was a little misleading and took me down the wrong path, but it makes sense now that I understand what the root cause was. No socket no login.

Perhaps this will be useful if anyone else runs into it.
