I am trying to restore a website on the same server, in a different folder/hostname. The restoration works with no errors, but at the end I get a 500 error (joomla orange page) in the frontend and in the backend.

Renamed .htaccess files both on the frontend and in the administrator folder with no success.

The log has these errors:

[14-Jan-2026 10:39:39 UTC] PHP Warning: require_once(/srv/data/web/vhosts/ecupharma.it/htdocs/includes/defines.php): Failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /srv/data/web/vhosts/ecupharma.it/htdocs/index.php on line 36
[14-Jan-2026 10:39:39 UTC] PHP Fatal error: Uncaught Error: Failed opening required '/srv/data/web/vhosts/ecupharma.it/htdocs/includes/defines.php' (include_path='.:/usr/share/php:/srv/data/web/includes') in /srv/data/web/vhosts/ecupharma.it/htdocs/index.php:36

Can you please help?

Another error in Apache log:

You are missing a file that's part of Joomla itself, includes/defines.php. If you did not get any errors during the extraction of the backup that would mean that the file was not in the backup archive. Quite possibly you had an unfortunate file exclusion, or the file was unreadable and you ignored the warning about it.

I tried to restore another, new backup file, suspecting that the previous file might be corrupted. In fact this time the restore was successful. So my guess was true.

Thank you anyway.

Yes, the backup was problematic. As I said, it was missing a file required by Joomla. Well, that's why you need to keep multiple backups. You never know when you'll need them :)
